Meerkats, Mongooses & Martens
Thursday 18th March 7:30pm
For four years, Neil Jordan managed the ‘Kalahari Meerkat Project’ in South Africa. The project is one of the largest animal behaviour studies in the world, and researchers are able to get ‘up close and personal’ with groups of wild meerkats, allowing them to discover many new things about these fascinating and cooperative animals. He then moved on to study banded mongooses in Uganda, where he spent three years decoding their scent communication and trying not to be eaten by the local lion population!
Neil will give a slideshow of his experiences in Africa, and describe his current attempts to detect and protect pine martens in the South Lakes, where he now lives and works for the Vincent Wildlife Trust.
For more information on pine martens visit his website:

The fascinating world of Aquatic life is incredibly delicate and sensitive to the slightest change. However, on the whole its inhabitants are shy, nocturnal or both and so can be easily overlooked. Pressures from human needs are increasingly squeezing those in the water – but it certainly isn’t all doom and gloom, there are many solutions that will suit both us and them…..
Ben Lamb will be talking about the work of South Cumbria Rivers Trust who have been set up with the aim of improving water quality and habitat in South Cumbria, with a special focus on their newly formed local group, The Coniston and Crake Partnership.
